Replacement controllers and upgrade packages are not available for the PowerDrive Plus (Regen 1) system. Use this kit to convert your vehicle to the IQ system. This will you allow you to install a modern upgrade.
48V Regen 1 to IQ Conversion kit.
This kit is needed to convert any 1996 - 1997 Club Car DS with the Regen 2 (Powerdrive Plus) System to the IQ drive system. The Regen 1 system has the black T-shaped controller, two solenoids, a rocker-switch style F&R switch, and does NOT have a tow/run switch under the seat.
Why should you convert to IQ? Because your vehicle MUST have the IQ drive system in order to use the Alltrax XCT, Navitas TSX, or Navitas AC Drive System. The IQ car is the modern drive system that aftermarket controllers are designed to operate on. Without converting to IQ, none of the wire harness connectors would match and you'd never be able to use those upgrade components.
The Regen 1 system has a few components that are the same or compatible with the IQ system. You can use the original motor from this system as long as you don't exceed a 300 amp controller. Higher amp controllers are going to shorten the life span of an already 25+ year old motor. We recommend ordering an IQ upgrade package that contains a motor.
The Onboard computer from the Regen 1 system is not compatible with the wire harness from the IQ system. Therefore it must be removed from the vehicle when converting to IQ. The lack of OBC will result in the need for a new charger, as the OBC is responsible fortproviding charger control for the factory charger. For lead acid batteries, we recommend a smart charger such as a Lester Summit 2, MODZ Max, or FSIP Charge Plus. All of these chargers will work without requiring an onboard computer on your vehicle. We have the Lester and the FSIP charger in our online store if you're interested in those. If you're using one of our EcoBattery Lithium bundles, a charger will be included with the bundle and you won't have to purchase one separately.
The F&R Switch is the same on the Regen 1 as the IQ system, so it may be retained and re-used.
Regen 1 cars were built with the continuously variable potentiometer or the multi-step potentiometer for throttle control. We have a drop down menu on the page that gives you the option of leaving your existing throttle on the car or converting to MCOR throttle with our MCOR4 conversion kit. We recommend selecting YES to this menu item for several reasons. Reason 1 is that the MCOR4 throttle is MUCH smoother operating than the multi-step potentiometer and much higher quality than the continuously variable potentiometer. Reason 2 is that the wire harness that comes with this kit is designed to plug directly into the MCOR throttle. The continuously variable potentiometer or multi-step potentiometer may be integrated into this wire harness by splicing the five MCOR wires color-by-color to the wires exiting your multi-step potentiometer and the vehicle will run just fine, but much more jerky and abrupt than it would if you were to convert to MCOR4 throttle. Even if your vehicle has already been converted to the original MCOR1 throttle, we still recommend selecting YES to this menu option simply due to the age of your MCOR1. Even though it's compatible, they have not been in production in nearly 15 years now so any original MCOR1 is extremely old at this point, so we recommend swapping it out for the MCOR4.
